The Great Hall
March 24 2012
With the release of his third album, 2011's What Were You Expecting? , Van Hunt finally made his Toronto debut with an intimate performance at The Great Hall. Strolling nonchalantly onto the stage with his three piece band, Hunt began a lengthy loose jam incorporating partial versions of various songs. The casual groove and sometimes sudden time changes may have been too challenging for some as many at the back of the venue began talking loudly instead of trying to follow what was happening onstage. And it was noted by the performer.
To combat the embarrassing rudeness, a segment of the crowd partially redeemed Toronto in Hunt's eyes by singing along to the material loud enough to cause him to crack a smile.
Alternating between guitar and keyboards, Hunt performed tracks from all three of his albums and surprisingly even did "The Lowest 1 Of My Desires" from the notoriously unreleased 2007 album Popular. For the devoted at the front of the stage, the show was a rare chance to witness edgy R&B creativity in the moment.
Too bad more people didn't care.
