Mayhem

Almost precisely two years to the date of Mayhem's last Toronto visit (reviewed here) the legendary Norwegian black metal masters returned. This time they were on the second date of a new tour that saw the band essaying the hugely influential 1994 De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas album in full. Also being promoted was the excellent new CD/ DVD De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas Alive set.

Behind an almost impenetrable sheet of blue lighting, the band tore into "Funeral Fog" and "Freezing Moon" with the album's original vocalist Attila Csihar making his presence known sonically if not visually. Grinding guitars and of course Hellhammer's pummelling drumming formed a dramatic foundation for Csihar's creative screaming. If this show was less visually arresting than the 2015 concert, you sure couldn't fault the music which was entirely compelling.

The 55 minute set consisted entirely of the album's eight songs with absolutely no encores presented despite the enthusiastic crowd response. What are you going to do? It's fucking Mayhem.
